There are no special considerations. Answers to your specific questions:

    1) Will Raw Power be able to view all the photos, even if some of them are optimized versions instead of original?

    Yes

    2) Will Raw Power request that Photos download the original version from iCloud, or does this need to be done manually in Photos before editing in Raw Power?

RAW Power will use the Photo library to download the images on demand. You do not need to use Photos. In addition, there is a “batch download” feature in the app, so you can download the images you are interested in ahead of working. You do not need to use that though.

    3) What about if I’m just culling / rating photos using Raw Power? Safe to assume this can be done with the optimized image (assuming answer to #1 above is “yes”)

Yes, the optimized image is generally fine. However, that image is often an embedded JPEG, so it may either be a) small or b) different-looking from the RAW (as embeddeds can be)

JPEGs built by the camera (including the embedded JPEGs) will have a lot of in-camera processing applied, including color, sharpness, noise reduction, and more. The RAW does not have any of that applied. When you are viewing the image before going into edit you are usually looking at the JPEG. Then, when the RAW loads, you are viewing the RAW. Each decoder applies some amount of improvement to the RAW, but it’s going to less (and different) from the camera. That is the cause of the shift.

Affinity Photo uses a different RAW converter – if they are actually allowing you to edit the RAW, then their rendition should have similar effects. It’s a different converter, so how they choose to render the RAW will be different (for example, they may apply more processing than Apple does).

    Here are the rules.

iCloud will only sync a library if it’s the System Photo Library.
The System Photo Library does not need to be connected to iCloud.
RAW Power can only read the System Photo Library.

A VM will probably not work super well for editing images, because GPU acceleration generally does not work in VMs and RAW Power is very reliant on a fast GPU.

If you create a separate user, with the same iCloud account, then yes, they will be merged. However, my idea was for people who have both an iCloud library and a non-iCloud library and they want to be able to work with them independently. Switching between those with Photos is a pain and it’s error-prone, compared with just switching users.

If Halide is not installed and you tap the button, the app brings up the App Store so you can purchase it if you like.

    Hi,

It’s certainly possible to read/write the ratings to a sidecar – right now they are saved in a database for performance reasons, but I would like to add some kind of export ability. It could conceivably write them both to the database and to the sidecar. I was trying not to spew sidecars all over the place when people make small changes like ratings or flags, but it would be reasonable to make it some kind of option.

Halide will run on the iPad, but as an iPhone app (it doesn’t take advantage of the iPad screen). RAW Power does not show Halide in that case because it’s not a configuration they have developed for. The next version of the app will have a preference to hide the camera button.

The fix for folder name truncation has shipped in 3.2.

My personal system is a mess. Currently, I import images right into Photos and use both Photos and RAW Power.
For testing stuff, I usually use the file based system (photos from customers, etc.)
So, I use both parts of RAW Power!

I could make a setting to hide the button, but it doesn’t take the place of anything else in the app (you aren’t losing any features by its presence). Do you just use the Apple camera app, or do you use a different camera app?

Halide only works on the iPhone, so the button only appears there. On iPad the button is suppressed.

Where do you see the camera button? I’m running 3.2 on an iPad and I don’t see it. Are you referring to the iPhone?

Sounds like a bug. I’ll make a note for a dot release. Managing the buttons is complicated and error prone, unfortunately.

RAW Power 3.2 has support for ProRAW, including a new slider in RAW Processing called Local Tone Map. I’m working on a video to explain it all right now…
