I’m not 100% sure, but I believe that I cannot add the flag metadata field to a photo. Spotlight works through “metadata importers” – one per file type. The system provides the importer for images, so I cannot replace it and add my own stuff. It is probably possible to add metadata a different way, but it would not be the flag. I have read articles that it’s possible to add metadata to a file using Finder comments and then find them using Spotlight (as a user) – something similar is probably possible for the code.
As far as Ratings go, that is also not in the app. I would have to look at it more to see – if Spotlight reads XMP ratings, then I could conceivably add ratings via XMP but that would require RAW Power modify the original file, which is something I don’t do (for safety reasons).
Smart Folders are Finder objects – they are not real File System objects (like files and folders). As a result, they cannot be added to RAW Power (only the Finder knows they exist).
Sorry for all the “no’s”.

December 20, 2021 at 6:09 pm in reply to: Deleted and reinstalled RAW Power on iPad —where are all my photos and edits? #128407Nik BhattKeymasterHi Grant,
I’m very sorry to hear about your experience. If you are using RAW Power with the Photo library, then all of your edits and ratings are preserved after deleting the app. That’s because the data is stored in the photo library. If you use the “Files” side of the app (integration with Files.app), then deletion will remove ratings and edits because those are stored as part of the app’s documents and those are deleted when the app is.
It sounds like the library is not loading in the app, which is very odd. Please email support@gentlemencoders.com because this will take a little back and forth to figure it out.
Nik BhattKeymasterHi Andy,
Levels should not be crashing; it sounds like something specific to certain images. If you can upload a sample image that crashes, I can look into a fix. Please email support@gentlemencoders.com and I will send you the URL (I don’t want to publish the URL here on a public-facing website).
Editing slows down – I’m not sure what you are seeing, so it’s hard for me to determine what the issue is. I have not experience something similar; slider lag usually indicates the GPU is being overdriven, but I would think your machine would be plenty capable enough.
I’ll make a note of the histogram issue. That’s a new one for me.
RAW Brick. The sliders provides are determined by Apple based on the format of the file. Depending on the version of DNG you used, you will get different sliders. The preset could have a bug based on that series of steps.
Yes, the crop and straighten tool needs refinement. I’m not happy with it either 🙁

November 17, 2021 at 2:07 pm in reply to: Can I use RawPower to import and edit ProRaw files on Catalina? #127736Nik BhattKeymasterSorry, RAW Power uses Apple’s ProRAW decoding technology and that is only available on 11.1 or later.
Nik BhattKeymasterUnfortunately, it is not possible to show user-generated smart albums in RAW Power. Apple has not seen fit to expose those to 3rd party apps. I’m not sure why.
Nik BhattKeymasterHi,
Thanks for the suggestions. I agree that the app could use a better import experience. One of the problems is that iOS has some bugs with import that I have reported, but they haven’t fixed – specifically around progress. I think it’s possible to work around them with some effort.
Further rating options like colors are certainly possible. Color (tags) are supported on Mac because the Finder has that.
The other features make sense too, though the filtering menu request is a little confusing to me. The panel works the way it does because it has to fit on tiny iPhone screens where a panel simply wouldn’t fit. I’m not sure it would fit on an iPad mini in portrait orientation either. I suppose it’s possible to build separate interfaces for iPad and others, though I try to avoid that due to the effort involved. I’ll think about it though. Aperture didn’t have such a panel either, but it did have shortcut keys to quickly set common filtering options. That might be a good compromise.
Nik BhattKeymasterThe app does not have a retouch tool, so I suggest using the one in Photos. If you do so, I recommend retouching after doing any edits in RAW Power (at least if you are working with a RAW). That’s because any time two editors are involved, the second one will be editing a JPEG generated by the first editor. If you want to know more about how that works, I wrote an article here: Article
September 19, 2021 at 3:22 pm in reply to: Hidden panels come back when returning from edit mode #127108Nik BhattKeymasterHi,
The panels generally do remember their state, so I’m confused that you are seeing this. I just tried your steps, and after leaving Edit, the browser and thumbnails were still hidden. The info panel did reappear though. Probably the best way to try to resolve this is to upload a video so I can look at it. Please email me at support@gentlemencoders.com and we can go from there. Thanks.
Nik BhattKeymasterHi,
There could be more shortcut access to tools – most of the adjustments can be added with a keystroke, but not for a tool within an adjustment (e.g. crop). It’s something I’d like to improve in the future, but it’s trickier to get right than it might appear (I have tried in the past but my quick fixes caused other bugs).
I don’t have an ETA to share for graduated filters or other selective adjustments. Sorry – I have provided ETAs for features in the past, but since RAW Power is made by an individual developer (me), many things can throw me off track, so I no longer provide estimates or future directions.
Nik BhattKeymasterThe app doesn’t have an AI Based noise reduction.
It is certainly possible to reduce noise in jpegs in general. I was just making sure you know that the RAW Power noise reduction is limited to RAW.
Nik BhattKeymasterIf you have a RAW image, then you can use the sliders that are in the RAW Processing adjustment. There are three: Luma Noise (black and white noise), Color Noise (color speckles) and Detail. The Detail slider brings back some grain that can be lost when applying denoise. There are no noise reduction tools for JPEG.
Nik BhattKeymasterI recall seeing a bug with Photos and switching between R+J when the RAW is unsupported. It definitely used to work, but it may hang now. That’s a Photos bug (the extension isn’t loaded, so it cannot be the extension causing the problem).
The key thing to know is that the extension is very restricted in what it can do. It can only edit the image that Photos gives it. In the case of R+J, it edits one or the other depending on the Use RAW Original or Use JPEG Original setting. The extension _cannot_ switch to the RAW on its own (there is no facility for that).
If you are set to JPEG+RAW (that is, viewing the JPEG), then that’s what Photos sends to the extension (only). If you switch to RAW, then it gets that (assuming you have not edited the image in Photos or another extension already).
You might have better luck if you switch to RAW before entering edit, but I don’t know for sure (I’m not at my computer to test this myself).
The standalone app has full access to both the R+J so it can edit either half of the pair as needed.
Nik BhattKeymasterHi Mikhail,
Sorry to hear about this problem. I have not run into it before. For Photos libraries, access to all images is through macOS itself. I imagine there might be some kind of cache that could be at issue. The simplest thing to do at this point is to remove a few files from the application’s sandbox folder. That should clear any stale data.
What the following steps will do is remove any Locations or Favorites that the application has remembered.
1) Quit the app if it’s running
2) Go to the Finder
3) Pick the Go > Go to Folder menu item
4) Paste this in and hit return:
~/Library/Containers/com.gentlemencoders.RAWPower/Data/Library/Application Support/
5) You will see a file called Locations.rpbookmarklist
6) Rename it (e.g., preface with a “-“ or something)You can do the same thing for Favorites.rpbookmarklist and singleFileEditor.rpbookmarklist
7) Open the app.
If you add directories at that point, the app will make a new Locations.rpbookmarklist, etc.
If that does not help, then the preferences file could also be removed, but that can be step 2.
To remove the preferences file, you can do the following:
1) Quit the app
2) Go to the Finder
3) Pick the Go > Go to Folder menu item
4) Paste this in and hit return:
~/Library/Containers/com.gentlemencoders.RAWPower/Data/Library/Preferences/
5) Delete com.gentlemencoders.RAWPower.plist and 6MR872QP3J.RAWPower.sharedDefaults.plist.
6) Open the appNik BhattKeymasterYes, it not only supports them, but it has a special slider just for those files. I made a video that discusses ProRAW and how to use RAW Power with it. You can see it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LguSpnDoShM
