Hi Nik,
in RAW Power 3.0.4 for iOS, it is possible to export from the Photo Library to the Photo Library, e.g. you can select an Album in the Photo Library that jpgs from raws should be exported to. In RAW Power for macOS that doesn’t seem to be possible? Am I not seeing this option? Or is there a good reason not to allow this in RAW Power for macOS?
Thanks,
ErikErik BrammerParticipantHi Nik,
today I encountered a strange thing with RAW Power 3.0.4 running on my iMac 27″ 2020 on Mac OS 10.15.6. I had edited 7 jpgs in an Album in my iCloud Photo Library, then selected those 7 images to export jpgs versions with the adjustments done into my photo archive. I selected these images in the film strip, right-clicked for the context menu, selected Export, and then the error message came up saying “RAW Power can only export images at this time. There are no images selected for export.” But there was nothing but those 7 jpgs in the film strip. I will email you a screen shot.
I think I have identified a certain behavior: When I select the images in the film strip by expanding a rectangle over those images using the mouse, then select export, I get the error message. If, however, I select a first images, then shift-click the last image to create the selection, export works fine.
Just wanted to share this here in case someone comes across that same error and needs a workaround.
Best regards,
ErikErik BrammerParticipantThank you, Nik, I will definitely give Brightness and Vibrancy (rather than Saturation) a try.
Erik BrammerParticipantHi Nik,
thanks a lot for your response. I will certainly pay attention to what happens when importing raws vs jpgs in the future separately – pairs should not be created. What’s new to me, and thanks for pointing that out, is that Photos allows the import of unsupported raws. I will also try out that one with all the raws from the X100V – if they will only be supported later (hopefully when Big Sur is released), that’s fine with me.
Best regards,
ErikErik BrammerParticipantHi Nik and Bob,
I‘ve come across this thread after I recently made a strange observation upon importing new images to the Photos iCloud library.
Here is my usual workflow concerning my Fujifilm X-Pro2 on my iMac27 2020 running the latest version of Mac OS:
1. Copy the jpgs from the SD card to a folder on the Mac.
2. Use Raw Power to screen them and delete those I don’t like.
3. Download the corresponding raws of the keepers to a different, i.e. parallel folder to the jpg folder.
4. Rename jpgs to a “speaking” name incl. date and event, using the Finder batch rename with index.
5. Rename the corresponding raws using the same naming scheme, of course ending up with the raf Suffix rather than jpg.
6. Drag & drop first only the jpgs into PhotoS to add them to the library.
7. Drag & drop the raws into Photos to add them to the library.
8. Add the jpgs to an album for that event.
9. Add the raws to a raw album per year.Is my understanding and typical observation correct that this sequence of actions will NOT create raw+jpg pairs? This is what I want as I don’t like raw+jpg pairs.
I recently followed this workflow for images from my Fujifilm X100V. The Apple raw engine doesn’t support the raws from that camera yet, hence I shouldn’t have imported those raws to Photos in the first place. But I apparently did. The interesting bit is that Photos suddenly showed raw+jpg pairs, indicated by the “J“ in the upper right corner. No error message from Photos. Then I wanted to edit a first image in Raw Power, and rightly so Raw Power gave me an error message.
Any idea of how that behaviour can be explained?
And by the way, once the Apple raw engine will support the raws from the X100V and import those raws into the Photos library, can I safely assume Photos will NOT try to match those raws to the already existing jpgs to create raw+jpg pairs? That would be a nightmare for my way of managing assets in Photos.
Thanks,
ErikErik BrammerParticipantHi David,
have you tried Deepen and Lighten in the Enhance section of adjustments?
Cheers,
ErikErik BrammerParticipantCool, thank you, now let’s hope that the performance will be fine with released OS and HW.
Erik BrammerParticipantHi Nik,
Thanks a lot. I just replicated the process without first duplicating the JPGs – which I had done for no valid reason. Now they display in the correct sort order according to initial file creation date.
Having an alphabetical sort order option would still be useful in case the file creation date gets modified as part of file transfer processes.
Best regards,
ErikErik BrammerParticipantGreat, thank you!
Erik BrammerParticipantHi Nik,
I have subscribed to the 2TB iCloud plan in the meantime. Started to upload raw files to iCloud but I will keep JPGs and raws still on my iMac as an archive and yet another backup.
If I have already adjusted raws using Raw Power 2.x on my iMac, is there a way to get the adjustment data into the iCloud photo library and link it with the raw files there?
Cheers,
ErikErik BrammerParticipantThank you, Nik
Then I really wonder why people shoot raws with their iPhones rather than just editing iPhone JPGs.
Maybe someone can describe a valid use case for iPhone raws?
Cheers,
ErikErik BrammerParticipantI think I am raising a similar request as Uwe did on May 3rd.
Erik BrammerParticipantThanks a lot, Nik, waiting for the new iMacs then…
Erik BrammerParticipantWell, it Fuji X-Raw Studio develops X-Trans raw files with the available film simulations per camera model to JPG using a specified output color space applying some very basic additional conversion settings that you would also find in the camera – as it is actually using the camera to generate the JPGs. You can save conversion profiles for repeat use, and the conversion of each RAF leads to a sidecar file documenting those individual conversion settings.
It certainly ain’t a piece of software with great user interface, its operation is a bit clunky and not very intuitive, but it allows you generate ACROS versions of your raws or any other film simulation with Fuji great color science included.
Erik BrammerParticipantWould be great if that did the trick for those that are still using Aperture.
For what it’s worth, after just a bit of trying, I personally have discarded the idea of using ACDSee as a DAM tool. The basic search functionality such as “show me all images shot with camera X” or “… lens Y” is also available in Apple Photos. If ACDSee generally stores metadata such as keywords, rating etc. in its own, proprietary database and only upon request exports this to XMP sidecar files, Photos can pretty much do the same. So I will rather stick to my current suite of Raw Power, Fuji X-Raw Studio and Apple Photos. Once Raw Power 3.0 is out, I will see whether I will use Photos as the main repository including raw files (and upgrade my iMac and the iCloud storage plan at the same time – finally a valid reason to do so).
