ParticipantHi Nik,
A few days ago I wanted to post this comment on the thread about DAM.
Feature #4 would be useful: to detect metadata changes, in particular rating changes.
Otherwise I strongly agree with Karl Nyhus. Building a DAM is a whole other project and will leave Mr Bhatt with little time to improve Nitro (for which I’ve paid twice, due to the shenanigans with RAW Power). Fast RAW viewer, NeoFinder, Finder, ApolloOne are all very affordable or free tools to manage images and metadata. For serious metadata work, it’s a full time job, as the complexity of PhotoMechanic indicates. And PhotoMechanic regularly runs into serious metadata bugs despite twenty years and a multiple person development team only working on metadata.
I consistently got a 403 error until I removed the forward slash and the brackets.
There’s something a bit off about the encoding-posting filter. My answer ended up much later in the discussion than I would have liked, when the featuritis brigade already had the scent of blood in their nostrils.
Thanks, Alec

ParticipantI would agree that expecting full DAM capability from Nitro is outside it’s intended scope. I have used Photo Mechanic, Photo Supreme and recently Digikam for DAM tasks. All work well and do not try to be photo editors. The one thing that I think Nitro REALLY needs to address, (and Nik has previously commented on this) is the non standard xmp file format which is totally (to my knowledge) unusable outside of Nitro..meaning that tags and ratings entered into Nitro is useless everywhere else. What I recently discovered in Digicam is that it ALSO does the “file.ext.xmp” format like Nitro…BUT… has a setting that allows one to use xmp format that IS compatible with “commercial software” (Digicam is free /open source) with a note about the issue of the conflict with raw/jpeg stacks. Selecting that option solves the issue as far as I am concerned. NOT having the ability to write standard xmp sidecars is a global killer for me in terms of workflow. Otherwise, Nitro would be the first (and for the majority of files) the only step needed in workflow. Otherwise, I need to cull, tag and rate photos elsewhere, which opens a fork in the road for which “editor” to use. I really hope this xmp issue can get resolved at some point….gary

ParticipantIn regard to non-standard xmp file format, the Nitro manual says, “An option to write to the original file is planned for the future.”
Mr. Small, Won’t this feature solve your problem with non-standard sidecar naming?
