Cannot define Luminosity or Colour Range on nef file

Trying to use the luminosity mask and there are light parts of the image (especially on the right) that the mask will not pick up. If I feather the mask then that does find it but that also starts masking the dark areas of the tree. The same thing happens on colour range. Am I doing something wrong, I tried to attach a screen shot but the forum does not appear to allow that.

Mmmm – I seem to have cleared it by resetting the image and starting again – the image is in Photos. It was an unedited image so only the stuff that happens when a raw image is initially opened was applied. Weird and I will keep an eye on it.
