I have Do Not Hide Sidebar enabled in settings, but if I select a folder then it hides. My presumption was that setting would mean that the sidebar would always be open unless I did something to hide it.

So am I misunderstanding the feature or should I be doing something else to keep the sidebar open at all times? If that isn’t possible, I would like it as an option.

Here is the reason, I often organize multiday shoots into a master folder with a shoot name, and then folders with in that based on the date the pictures were taken. So it isn’t uncommon to want go back and forth between date folders when looking for something.

Yes, that’s how the feature works. If you turn on Do Not Hide Sidebar, then choosing a folder or double-clicking an image leaves the sidebar open. However, there is another feature that interacts with it, and it’s somewhat controlled by macOS itself. That is the “Lock” button in the toolbar. If you have the sidebar unlocked then it will hide anyway. So, please check that the sidebar is locked too.

ahhhh ok. The lock icon doesn’t say “lock sidebar”, nor does it have a tooltip, so there was no obvious association with sidebar. Please consider either changing the lock icon text or moving it onto the sidebar itself so it is more closely associated with it

Toolbar items cannot be on the left sidebar and “lock sidebar” is too long (especially when localized). I will add tooltips.
