This isn’t an issue with Nitro but rather a problem with Tahoe Public Beta which affects Nitro.

I noticed in Beta 1 that any RAW image from my Lumix camera would not open correctly in Apple Photos. In fact it would simply be a black rectangle. My solution was to switch to shooting RAW+JPEG while away on vacation and for the ones already taken I used Nitro to auto enhance as a batch before trying to view them.

Now with Tahoe Beta 2 those RAW only images simply crash Photos and even Nitro cannot deal with them. It looks as if Apple have somehow mucked up the RAW file handling in Tahoe and I suspect this will be a problem for Nick going forwards. Btw the public beta of iPadOS did exactly the same thing.

I’m back on Sequoia now (Tahoe was only on one of my Macs) and will not rush to Tahoe until I know it works.

Yes, I stumbled upon the same bug in the Developer 5 beta. Apple has broken RAW decoding for some cameras – doesn’t work in Photo or in Nitro. I have filed a bug, but I encourage you to file your own, in case mine gets lost somewhere. The best way is to file it against Photos, and ideally include an image in the bug report that doesn’t work.

They have also broken my extended RAW feature for many cameras, which I have also reported.

But the bug you are reporting and the extended RAW support bug are separate issues, unfortunately.

Thanks Nik, I did report it as soon as it came up – twice! It is disappointing that it has reached this stage without being corrected though. I would have thought Apple’s newly acquired Pixelmator team would have spotted it.

    Hi Rosemary,

The golden rule for multimedia is never use a beta OS, even better never use the current OS. Stay at least one version behind. Before the software developers stopped supporting older versions, I’d suggest staying two versions behind.

Making the web work for you, Alec
