What I am most interested in, in an Aperture replacement, is the ability to create smart albums. Tagging, rating, applying keywords to files across multiple folders, then gathering them into a smart album automatically. It does not seem that this is a thing in Nitro.

I tried flagging a few images in different folders, then going to the top folder, filtering by flag, and nothing happened. Only if I select the folder actually containing the flagged files does it show up when filtered for.

I just tried the exact same thing, on the same images in Photomator, and it instantly returned the flagged items – which were several layers deep.

I tried filtering in Photomator by a geographic area around my home town, and it instantly showed over 1700 images in a 100,000 image file structure that fit that criteria. No extra permissions needed to be done here. I have not moved on in either app to creating referenced smart albums, but that is my goal.

Capture one 20 has the ability to do this via a catalog file, but I find it slow and kinda clunky. I am shopping for a replacement app. I am much more interested in file management than editing, as C1 does that very well, as do other apps.

Is there something I am missing here?

Nitro does not currently have the ability to search and filter in the way you are describing for the file system. It can filter for flags in the current view which can have subfolders (but is limited in depth at the moment – I would like to remove that limitation). What I am explicitly avoiding is making a parallel to the Photo Library, with a complex database and where features like albums (and smart albums) etc are present on both sides.

Fair enough. Thanks for the detailed response!
