I have also read that these files contain a regular jpeg that will open when the ProRaw DNG wrapper is exported to a device or app not otherwise supporting ProRaw DNGs. In ExifTool these files look like linear DNGs, but I’ve not been able to find a lot of real information out there. In part, perhaps, because the early reviewers of the iPhone 16 Pro / Max were caught by surprise by this new output option and didn’t have time to make the usual comparisons. Thanks for looking into this, John.

This is a link to where you can download the sample file I’ve been testing. Thanks, John.

Thanks, Nik – but when the sample file is opened in Nitro for iPad, both the tone map and RAW tuning sliders appear to be active. Not sure what to make of that. I checked the file in ExifTool and it appears to be ok. John.

Thank-you, Nik. Yes, I have made the same observation regarding file sizes. Further, examination of the Halide DNG output files in ExifTool is consistent with what I find for similar files from ProCamera (Cocologic) and CameraPixels, other third-party iPhone camera apps. In FastRawViewer, the histograms from sequential images from these cameras are essentially identical. In short, there is nothing to suggest that the Halide DNG files are anything but the usual single-shot DNG RAW files. The Halide Process Zero feature seems to be an in-app demosaicing algorithm that outputs HEIC or JPEG files, nothing more.

Andy, you will need to first open a ProRaw file. Then the Tone Map slider will appear at the top of the Tone panel.
